Another one which springs to mind, I’m sure it was a TED video but cannot find it now… maybe you’ll have better luck… there was a guy who demoed a physical interface which could adapt to different uses, e.g. on a sheet of rubber (?) it would form 4 physically protruding (convex) buttons down one side, then it could physically remove those buttons and give you, instead, a 3×3 grid of buttons, if it needed different inputs from the user that couldn’t be simply configured to use the same button layout as the previous task/request.

It was quite neat! Good luck finding it – sorry I can’t be more specific (or that I don’t have a better memory!)

Good point Robert!

While I can understand Apple’s attempt to patent it’s interface. I can not agree with awarding anyone a patent for a “gesture”. It makes more sense to patent the technology that understands the gesture, than the gesture itself.

If Apple is successful however, I’ve got a gesture I’d like to patent. :P

I agree w/ Tuhin that the work @Clayton is doing on the 10/GUI in a leap forward in UI. While I would suspect Apple may still face some legal challenges defending their patent on pinching and other proprietary interfaces on the iPod/iPhone/iPad touch screens, I’d at least reference it’s impact on UI. Not only does it set a bar, that it is patented must also be a consideration for most future touch screen interfaces. I’d prefer a standardization of touch screen UI so that developers don’t have to implement different touch screen finger actions for each manufacturer — nor would users need to learn different ones for each device.
